BANTUL (9 February 2022) - A happy smile appeared on Mbah Adi's face while riding a new bicycle given by the Ministry of Social Affairs through Social Rehabilitation Center “Handayani”. The 76-year-old grandfather had long wanted a new bike because his old bike was too small for a man like him, and even the pedals were hard to pedal at times.

Mbah Adi asked for a bicycle not without reason. Every day, Grandpa (Mbah) Adi goes to the fields by bicycle. The rice fields are not far, it only takes 10 minutes to get to the rice fields by bicycle, but bicycles save enough energy.

The rice fields that Mbah Adi is working on are not his own, so the harvest from the fields must be divided between Mbah and the owner.

When harvests time, Mbah Adi can earn money for the amount Rp. 500 thousand to Rp. 1 million. There are three times harvests every year. This means that Mbah Adi earns a maximum of Rp. 3 million in one year.

To increase his income, Mbah Adi sometimes sells bananas that he grows behind the house. Although not much, enough to help meet the needs.

Mbah Adi lives alone with his grandson in a 10 x 12 square meter house. The house looked neglected because both of them were busy working from morning to night.

Just like Mbah Adi, David also works in managing your brother's farm with a profit-sharing system. David raises goats and chickens which are sold to restaurants in Bantul. After managing the farm during the day, at night David manages Warmindo (stall) which is also owned by his brother.

“This shop belongs to my uncle. If it's busy at night, ma'am, because it's close to the Mangunan fruit orchard and pine forest," he said to Social Workers from Handayani Center and the PKH Assistance Team who came to his house.

Previously, Mbah Adi and David were the recipients of the PKH (Program Keluarga Harapan) whose identities were included in the verification and validation of visual data which was directly ordered by the Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini so that they could be assessed and given entrepreneurship assistance.

The data shows David's name as the recipient with the address Duren Sawit, East Jakarta. However, David's name is not registered as a resident or recipient of PKH in Duren Sawit. After searching through the coordinates, it was found that David was in Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta.

David became the manager of Mbah Adi's PKH fund because of the rule that the elderly cannot be in charge. David replaces his grandmother (Mbah Adi's wife) who died in 2018. According to David, PKH helps his grandfather's life.

"Thank God, it helped Mbah ma'am. We receive the assistance every 3 months. A month it can be Rp. 600 thousand," he explained.

Mbah Adi and David hope that they can get useful help and can make them independent. Therefore, based on the results of the assessment, Mbah Adi was assisted in the form of a new bicycle worth Rp. 1,650,000, while David was given ATENSI Entrepreneurship support worth Rp. 3 million in goods and materials to open Warmindo (stall). The aid was handed over directly to the two on Wednesday (9/2).

Meanwhile, the Head of Handayani Center, Sulistya Ariadhi said that the Center was moving quickly to respond to directions from Social Minister Risma.

“We are moving quickly to respond to the Minister's direction. For example, the case of Mbah Adi. We were asked to verify according to the coverage area, then we immediately sent a team down for tracing. Until finally we met in Bantul, which was originally recorded in East Jakarta. Thank God, we are also helped a lot by the regional government and companions," he said.

According to Sulistya, currently, the assistance from the Center is wider in scope. ATENSI, he continued, provides flexibility for the Center in providing assistance that is not only limited to access to sources but also to assist.
