Rehabilitation for the Persons with Social Deviance Issues and Victims of
Trafficking in Persons, Waskito Budi Kusumo representing the Director General
of Social Rehabilitation, Harry Hikmat, attended the International Day of
Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism.
This commemoration is the
fourth since it was first held in 2017, as well as marking the 20th anniversary
of the tragedy of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that occurred in 2001. The United
Nations General Assembly, through Resolution 72/165 in 2017 then set August 21
as a day of commemoration to the Victims of Terrorism to honor and support the
victims and survivors of terrorism.
In addition, the purpose
of this commemoration is to promote and protect all the enjoyment of human
rights and their fundamental freedoms. Resolution 72/165 builds on existing
efforts by the General Assembly, the Human Rights Commission, and the Human
Rights Council to promote and protect the rights of victims of terrorism.
By proclaiming an
International Day dedicated to the victims, the General Assembly reaffirms that
the promotion and protection of human rights and the rule of law at the
national and international levels is essential to preventing and combating
terrorism.
The commemoration of this
year uses the theme is Connection because victims had to find creative ways to
stay connected while isolated from their family, friends, and community during
the pandemic.
In 2021, which marks the
2nd year of Covid-19, the United Nations emphasizes the importance for the
international community to connect and stand in solidarity with the victims.
Learning from each other ensures that victims' needs are met and their rights
are enforced.
