JAKARTA (August 26, 2020) - Through the Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Indonesia handed over a number of aids to Indonesian Citizens Migrant Victims of Trafficking in Persons (WNI M KPO).
Yasar Ogul Acting Chief of Mission IOM Indonesia said, "IOM supports the Indonesian government in providing humanitarian assistance, to populations who are affected and have high health risks and social consequences for COVID-19, especially Indonesian migrant workers returning to their homeland.
IOM has supported the delivery of medical supplies and health facilities as well as ventilators to the National Task Force, the delivery of PPE to the RPTC under the Ministry of Social Affairs in the form of customized assistance for victims of human trafficking and migrant workers who are vulnerable as a result of the pandemic. In addition, information is provided for migrant workers about preventing COVID-19, as well as safe return procedures during the pandemic," said Yasar.
Yasar said, through this funding opportunity and with the support of a good Partnership with the Ministry of Social Affairs and other relevant ministries, IOM will carry out various activities ranging from rapid assessments with the Government of Indonesia to providing assistance for vulnerable cases in shelters or transit, for victims human trafficking, victims of gender-based violence and other vulnerable cases.
"Today, we are happy to hand over 2,500 hygiene kit packages for PMI who are in transit at the return post for Indonesian Citizen M KPO Pontianak," said Yasar.
The Ministry of Social Affairs through the Director General of Social Rehabilitation, Harry Hikmat welcomed the longstanding partnership with IOM.
"First, of course, on behalf of the Ministry of Social Affairs, which was conveyed by the Minister of Social Affairs, Mr. Juliari P Batubara, to thank IOM for the assistance and support and cooperation with the Ministry of Social Affairs. As stated by Mr. Yasar, IOM has assisted in the assessment and then efforts to prevent and control COVID infections. "Then IOM also supports the procurement of facilities and infrastructure, which is still in process," said Harry.
Harry said that his party is making an effort so that the handling of migrant workers, who are generally victims of trafficking in persons or KPO and also victims of physical and sexual violence, is not only responded to after a case occurs.
"But the Ministry of Social Affairs cooperate with relevant Ministries, especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, so that various prevention efforts are also carried out in countries where migrant workers are already working in the country. So this preventive effort is very important," concluded Harry.
