JAKARTA (July 22, 2021) - The Director General of Social Rehabilitation, Harry Hikmat accompanied by the Director of Social Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities, Eva Rahmi Kasim, attended the National Coordination Team Meeting for Efforts to Respect, Protect and Fulfill the Rights of Persons with Disabilities as speakers in the discussion of the Incheon strategy matrix to realize the rights of Persons with Disabilities in the Asia and Pacific Region.

 

The meeting of the National Coordination Team meeting which was held virtual is a form of follow-up to the implementation of Law Number 8 of 2016 on Persons with Disabilities mandated that the Ministry of Social Affairs be the coordinator for the implementation of the law related to synchronizing programs, budgeting and financing, as well as how to implement them at the ministry and institution level.

 

The Director General of Social Rehabilitation said that the framework for implementing the mandate is contained in Law Number 8 of 2016, so the state must carry out monitoring and evaluation related to respect, protection, and fulfillment of the rights of Persons with Disabilities.

 

"On this occasion, we have an obligation to monitor and evaluate the implementation of the Incheon Strategy, namely the agenda for the 2013-2022 Asia Pacific Decade of Persons with Disabilities which has been set by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (UN-ESCAP) in 2012, "explained Harry.

 

There are 10 goals to be achieved in realizing the rights of Persons with Disabilities which are a priority strategy and have been formulated for the Asia Pacific level:

(1). Reducing poverty and increasing job and employment opportunities;

(2). Promoting participation in political processes and decision-making;

(3). Improving access to the physical environment, public transport, knowledge, information, and communication;

(4). Strengthening social protection;

(5). Strengthening early intervention and education for children with disabilities;

(6). Ensuring gender equality and empowering women;

(7). Ensuring disability-inclusive disaster risk management and reduction;

(8). Improving the accuracy and comparability of disability data;

(9). Accelerating the ratification and implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the harmonization of National Legislation with the Convention; and

(10). Promoting sub-regional, regional and inter-regional cooperation.

Harry Hikmat said that the Minister of Social Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Tri Rismaharini, had given directions for the steps that must be taken in preparing for the international conference, "That's where we might end up showing the international community, the progress that has been achieved, the challenges faced, and the efforts in dealing with these challenges as well as the cooperation support of the parties so that Indonesia does not leave behind in proposing our efforts to provide protection and fulfillment of Persons with Disabilities," said Harry.

The meeting of the National Coordination Team meeting was attended via virtual by Echelon I Officials in the Ministry of Social Affairs and representatives from each Ministry and Institution.
