PEKANBARU (25 May 2021) - A child with the initials AAP who was diagnosed with severe depression in Pelalawan District a few months ago has now recovered. AAP can communicate well and can introduce to their environment.

Previously, on October 10, 2021, AAP was reported missing for 3 days. When found, the child was silent and was reluctant to speak at all. His physical condition is poor with shabby clothes. The Pelalawan Regency Social Service recommended AAP to get protection at the Pekanbaru “Rumbai” Center, one of the Ministry of Social Affairs' Technical Implementation Units (UPT) is based on allegations of violence but it cannot be ascertained. This is because AAP, who is a cheerful child, suddenly shows depressive behavior after disappearing from home.

The development of fluctuating behavior is sometimes difficult for the Center’s staff to condition. AAP also experienced suicide attempts by drinking floor cleaning soap, eating twigs, and trying to harm himself during the initial adaptation period in the Center. AAP takes a long time to adjust when with friends and is less responsive in responding to officers when invited to communicate.

The head of the "Rumbai" Center in Pekanbaru, Ahmad Subarkah, confirmed the initial conditions of the AAP. "It takes about one month of adaptation so that the child gets used to the new situation and conditions. Efforts have been made to discuss AAP cases, medical examinations, providing therapy, and peer support in the AAP adaptation process," he explained.

Meanwhile the Center’s Social Worker, Surita Triya explained the strategic steps that the Center had taken in the process of handling AAP. "To provide proper service to AAP, Rumbai Center held a case conference with other professionals. The involvement of psychologists, social workers, referral institutions, nurses, and carers is part of the discussion activities to determine the assessment steps, intervention design, and discuss the sustainability of post-rehabilitation for children," she said.

Until termination, the exact cause of the diagnosis of major depression on AAP was not yet known, considering the recommendation of clinical psychologists to keep away from sources of trauma, including asking about AAP problems. This is based on the results of the case discussion with referrers and professionals, that there should not be too many people asking AAP about the case so as not to cause trauma.

During the social rehabilitation process at the Center, AAP received routine health check services at the Lancang Kuning Hospital which was specialized in asthma. In addition, the center also assists AAP in mental health examinations at the Tampan Mental Hospital to assist the recovery process for children's health conditions, both physically and mentally. Providing additional nutrition is also provided by the staff of the Center.

In the process, the child follows physical therapy such as regular exercise every week. Mental spiritual healing such as prayer, recitation, and study of women's jurisprudence. Psychosocial therapies such as relaxation, counseling, and motivation by social workers. Therapeutic skills such as sewing and make-up. In addition, children also participate in recreational activities such as group dynamics and swimming activities.

After rehabilitation, the child is returned to the extended family to be cared for according to their rights. Monitoring and evaluation are needed to see the success of handling and progress of AAP. Rumbai Center regularly checks the condition of the child's development.

The rehabilitation, which has been carried out for about 2 months, shows progress. Currently, AAP is in good condition, healthy, and able to carry out its social functions in the community. His current routine activities are schooling and adapting to Islamic boarding schools which have a positive impact on the progress of AAP's behavior development.

Currently, children can adapt and are actively communicating with their peers. His physical condition is also getting better.

The extended family is delighted by AAP's major changes. Uncle AAP said that hopefully changes in the Center so that AAP can be even better, can go to school again, become the successor of the nation and family," he concluded.
