Minister Risma Takes Speedboat to Rescue Mentally Ill Individual in Barito Kuala

BARITO KUALA (13 June 2024) - The Minister of Social Affairs, Tri Rismaharini, recently assisted an individual with a mental illness (referred to as ODGJ) in Sei Lirik Village, Bakumpai District, Barito Kuala, South Kalimantan. The person was taken to the hospital to receive the necessary treatment. To reach the destination, Minister Risma chose a speedboat for crossing across the river Martapura. Later, the minister had to make a one-hour drive to reach another ODGJ in the village of Begagap, located in the District of Bakumpai.

"We admit them to the hospital first." After they are stated as clear (healthy), we will transfer them to the family. But the Puskesmas (small-scale public health centre) has already been notified so that they can give the prescribed medication to ODGJ once a month,” said Minister Risma while giving an explanation to the press on Wednesday (12/6).

The ODGJs Minister Risma has taken are individuals who were previously subjected to chains and restraints. There are several reasons for this practice, such as the possibility of risky behavior and disoriented wandering. Minister Risma kindly reassured the families that there is no need for them to feel ashamed of their family members who are dealing with mental illness. As per Minister Risma's statement, it is important to acknowledge that mental health problems can affect anyone, as each person has their own unique psychological and mental state. She also mentioned that individuals from middle and upper-economic backgrounds can experience mental disorders.

Minister Risma emphasized the importance of recognizing that mental illness is similar to physical illnesses like heart disease, kidney disease, and diabetes, all of which necessitate proper treatment. “I was told by the doctor that if they (ODGJ) consume their medication regularly, it will be just like other illnesses like heart disease and diabetes,” she stated. She assured the community that the Social Security Agency on Health (BPJS) would cover the cost of the medication.

The Head Village of Begagap, Zulhamid, expressed his appreciation for the presence of Minister Risma, who personally picked up the ODGJ. “I thank Minister Risma for her arrival in our village. Even the Ministry of Social Affairs endeavors to cure the illness. Hopefully, my resident can recover as before,” he said.

Shackle Release is just one of the many social service activities taking place in Barito Kuala Regency. Since early June, the Ministry of Social Affairs has released 12 individuals with special needs.
