Ministry of Social Affairs Develops Disaster Preparedness Areas in Megathrust Potential Areas

The Ministry of Social Affairs develops Disaster Preparedness Areas (KSB) in potential Megathrust areas as an effort to increase community preparedness and mitigation in anticipating disaster events and reducing disaster risk.

For the initial stage, Disaster Preparedness Areas were developed in Cilacap and Kebumen Regencies, Central Java Province and Pangandaran Regency in West Java Province.

According to the 2017 National Earthquake Source Map published by the National Center for Earthquake Studies (Pusgen), the zones that have the potential to cause a Megathrust earthquake in Java are located in three locations, namely the Sunda Strait waters, the southern border of West Java and Central Java and the East Java-Bali segment.

To note, before the declaration of the KSB, the Ministry of Social Affairs first conducts a coordination meeting with the local government and related stakeholders. This coordination meeting is very important and becomes a momentum to harmonize communication and joint steps with all Ministry of Social partners at the provincial, city / district, and sub-district to village levels.
