NORTH ACEH (30 May 2024) – In commemoration of the 28th National Elderly Day (HLUN), the Ministry of Social Affairs (MoSA) is offering assistance to enhance business capital for elderly individuals who remain enthusiastic about engaging in activities. Among the beneficiaries is Grandpa Abdullah (84), a resident of Bluka Teubai Village in Dewantara District, North Aceh Regency, who received MoSA's Local Wisdom assistance.

MoSA provided assistance amounting to IDR 3,300,000 in response to Grandpa Abdullah's request and demands, which included purchasing thatch leaves, bamboo, and rattan as the primary materials for roofing. During this time, Grandpa Abdullah was a thatched roof craftsman. Despite his age, diminished physical strength, and failing eyesight, Grandpa Abdullah remains passionate about weaving thatch leaves for roofing purposes. He diligently produces 7-10 woven thatch leaves per day, adjusting his pace according to his physical condition, which reflects the realities of aging.

"My father has been weaving roofs out of thatch leaves for the past decade. He produces seven to ten woven thatch leaves daily," shared Zubaedah (47), Grandpa Abdullah's daughter. The thatch leaves were then sold at IDR 8,000 per sheet. Buyers typically purchase between 10 and 50 sheets of thatch leaves for their roof, with some purchasing up to 100 sheets. The quality of Grandpa Abdullah's woven thatch leaves is highly regarded by buyers due to their durability and meticulous craftsmanship.

Grandpa Abdullah used to rely on loans from thatch leaf traders to procure materials. Upon completing the weaving and selling process, the traders would claim a 30% share of the earnings.

"Now that he has gotten MoSA aid, my father no longer needs to borrow money to buy materials. He's become more independent,” expressed Zubaedah gratefully. "Thank you, Ministry of Social Affairs, for supporting my father," she added with a smile.
