Receiving a House from Minister of Social Affairs Risma, Farmers Feel Like They're Dreaming
BARITO KUALA (12 June 2024) – Minister of Social Affairs Tri
Rismaharini handed over a newly renovated house through the Integrated Welfare
House (RST) program to Bahruddin, a 46-year-old farmworker in Sungai Pitung
Village, Alalak District, Barito Kuala, South Sulawesi.
“Thank you, Minister Risma. It feels like a dream, getting this fine house,” expressed Bahruddin gratefully during Minister Tri Rismaharini's visit to his home on Tuesday (11/6). Previously, he lived in a simple raised structure above a swamp for 20 years, with walls of wood and a leaky palm leaf roof, lacking basic amenities except for cooking utensils and clothes.
Minister Risma engaged in a friendly dialogue with Bahruddin and his wife, Solatiah, during her visit. She also encouraged them to venture into duck farming to boost their income. “The eggs can be sold to increase your income,” remarked Minister Risma, a suggestion enthusiastically received by the couple, who had long dreamed of raising ducks but lacked the means to start.
“I am thankful for the help from Minister Risma,” Solatiah expressed. In addition to the house and duck farming initiative, the Ministry of Social Affairs (MoSA) provided a clean and ready-to-drink water treatment plant system with a capacity of 300 liters, which can be shared with neighbors who also struggle to access clean water. Previously, they had to buy clean water at IDR 3,000 per 20 liters or process river water with alum, a dangerous practice for consumption.
During the event, MoSA also provided Social Rehabilitation Assistance (ATENSI), including beds, cushions, windshields, cabinets, gas stoves, sofas, kitchen tables, and bathroom amenities. To enhance home lighting, MoSA installed solar home systems with 500- and 100-watt capacities. "Thank you, Madam Minister. May God repay all your goodness," said Solatiah as Minister Risma departed.
