JAYAPURA (14 December 2023) - Residents of Jayapura and its surroundings can now smile with relief.  Ministry of Social Affairs is collaborating with several foundations and agencies to hold free cataract surgery for the second time in Papua.  A total of 100 residents underwent free cataract surgery from 13 to 15 December 2023 at Bhayangkara Jayapura Hospital.

Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini, who directly observed the implementation of the surgery, said that she would further evaluate whether this surgery could be carried out again.

"I will see. I will evaluate whether next month it is possible to have another free surgery. Because cataracts are fatal, if it is too late, permanent blindness can occur and make it unproductive," said Risma, emphasizing the importance of cataract surgery.

Residents of Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, and Kerom Regency are very enthusiastic about taking part in this free cataract surgery.  It is proven that 209 prospective patients have registered to take part in pre-operative screening on December 9 to 10 2023.

Unfortunately, of this number, only 100 people were declared fit for surgery.  The majority failed screening because of high blood pressure.  A total of 35 patients underwent surgery on the first day, 35 more patients underwent surgery on the second day, and the rest will undergo surgery on the third day.

Residents were very enthusiastic about welcoming this surgery.  One of them is Haryantoro.  This 61-year-old resident from Sentani has been waiting for a long time for free cataract surgery.  His eyesight has decreased drastically since 2021, causing him to experience various difficulties.

"It's very disturbing, my eyes are watery. When I look, it's like it's foggy, so I often have trouble," said Haryantoro.

Receiving news from his brother, Haryantoro immediately registered and was very grateful to be able to undergo cataract surgery.  This man never stopped giving thanks.

"I am grateful to the Ministry of Social Affairs for holding social services by holding mass cataract operations. This is very helpful," concluded Haryantoro.
