Social Minister Ensures All Flood Victims are Handled Well

JAKARTA (January 2, 2020) - The Ministry of Social Affairs has recorded 30 deaths from flooding in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi (Jabodetabek). Social Minister Juliari P. Batubara said the victims would receive 15 million rupiah per person as compensation from the government.

"All heirs of the victims will get compensation of 15 million rupiah," said the Minister while visiting the flood site in Taman Harapan, Cawang, East Jakarta, Thursday (2/1).

In addition of providing compensation, Juliari also provides assistance to refugees. Juliari claimed to have coordinated with the Social Services Agency, Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) to evacuate victims and accommodate them in refugee camps. "We will make sure all victims can be handled and evacuated," said the Minister.

Not only that, Juliari also deployed the Disaster Preparedness Cadets (Tagana) and the Disaster Preparedness Village Team (KSB) to a number of points. "We are mobilizing Tagana and the KSB Team to evacuate," said the Minister.

The Ministry of Social Affairs also prepared a number of places to be used as shelter location and public kitchens such as the Social Rehabilitation Center for People with Visual Impairment (PSBN) owned by the Regional Government of DKI Jakarta and Borobudur University on Jalan Raya Kalimalang. A total of seven KSBs were also prepared such as KSB Cilandak Timur, KSB Cilincing, and KSB Rawajati.

To ease the burden of the refugees, the Ministry of Social Affairs has distributed assistance worth 4.8 billion rupiah, consisting of 1.9 billion for DKI Jakarta Province, 1.5 billion for West Java Province, and 720 million for Banten Province.

The details of assistance provided by the Ministry of Social Affairs as follows for DKI Jakarta worth 1.9 billion rupiah consists of the first stage worth Rp. 750 million which is manifested in the form of 2,000 ready-to-eat food packages, 1,800 children's food packages, 30,000 packs of instant noodles, 500 sheets of rolled tents, 200 packages of family kits, 200 packages of kids ware, 200 packages of food ware, 200 packages of family kitchen equipment, 200 packages of blankets, and 100 packages of clothing.

While the second stage of assistance for the DKI Jakarta Province is Rp. 527 million, which is manifested in the form of 800 packages of fast food, 300 children's food packages, 8,000 packs of instant noodles, 200 pieces of tent rolls, 200 packages of family kits, 200 packages of kids ware, 200 packages of food ware, 200 packages of family kitchen equipment, 200 packages of blankets, and 100 packages of clothing.

Emergency Response Logistics Assistance to Cipinang and Senayan worth Rp. 465 million, and rice worth Rp. 210 million.

While the details of the assistance for West Java Province amounting to 1.5 billion rupiah consists of the first stage worth Rp. 1,081 billion consisting of 1,850 children's food packages, 30,120 instant noodle packages, 3 units of multipurpose family tents, 450 sheets of rolling tents, 230 units of velbed, 230 units of mattresses, 1 package of public kitchen fields, 230 packages of family kits, 230 packages of kids ware, 230 packages of food ware, 230 packages of family kitchen equipment, and 40 packages of clothing.

Then, the second stage of assistance for the West Java Province worth Rp. 463 billion consisting of 400 fast food packages, 200 children's food packages, 5,000 instant noodle packages, 200 blanket sheets, 200 family kit packages, 200 kids ware packages, and 200 food ware packages.

Emergency Response Logistics Assistance to the flood site in Pondok Gede Permai, Medan Satria and Tambun in Bekasi City worth Rp. 258 million.

For Banten Province, logistics assistance for emergency response was valued at 680 million, as well as 40 million for Tangerang City.

Healing Trauma Services

In addition to providing assistance in the form of logistics and food, the Ministry of Social Affairs also fielded a Psychosocial Support Services (LDP) team.

The Minister said the recovery of trauma caused by the disaster to the refugees, especially children, was needed. He gave an example as inviting children to play and tell stories. This is done to restore their mentality when they return to their homes and activities like before.

On this occasion, Juliari invited children to dialogue in refugee camps. "What is your name? Tell me, what were you like during the flood? What were you told by your parents?" asked Juliari.

"Being told to run to the neighbours," answered Nabila innocently. Social Minister chimed in as he invited to pray that the floods would soon recede. "Yes, we pray together, so that the floods will recede quickly, you can go back home," said Social Minister who agreed at the same time from the children.

Also assisting the Minister of Social Affairs in reviewing flood locations in Jakarta, two Deputy Chairpersons of the House of Representatives Commission VIII Ace Hasanudin and Marwan Dasopang, including Director General of Social Security Protection Harry Hikmat, Inspector General Dadang Iskandar, Head of Education, Research and Social Counseling Agency Syahabuddin, Senior Advisor for Social Accessibility Sonny W. Manalu.
