MEDAN (November 10, 2021) - The potential for disasters in North Sumatra Province is at number 16 out of 34 provinces in Indonesia. This refers to the Indonesian Disaster Risk Index (IRBI) issued by the National Board of Disaster Management (BNPB).

This prompted Commission VIII of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) to carry out a Specific Working Visit with the Ministry of Social Affairs and related institutions to discuss disaster management in North Sumatra Province.

The visit of Commission VIII of the DPR RI was led by the Deputy Chairman of Commission VIII of the DPR RI, TB. Ace Hasan Syadzily, accompanied by the Director General of Social Protection and Security, Pepen Nazaruddin, and the Secretary of the Directorate General of Social Rehabilitation, Idit Supriyatna, as representatives of the Ministry of Social Affairs, and the Director of Early Warning BNPB, Afrial Rosa.

During his visit, the House handed over assistance from the Ministry of Social Affairs which was received by the Regional Secretary of North Sumatra Province, Afifi Lubis, in the form of logistics for disaster management worth IDR 706 million and Social Rehabilitation Assistance (ATENSI) support worth IDR 1.2 billion for Medan City and Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra.

During his visit, the House wanted to ensure the readiness of local governments in dealing with disasters, "Because we know that currently, some areas are experiencing extreme weather due to La Nina and it will affect rainfall. In certain areas in North Sumatra, there are floods and landslides," said Ace in Medan, Wednesday (10/11).

It is better, continued Ace, for us to be vigilant and take preventive measures, rather than later a disaster can cause more victims.

The House encourages the government's readiness to deal with disasters, especially coordination and integration between institutions, "so that the regions have a clear command in anticipating the possibility of a disaster," said Ace again.

Also present were members of Commission VIII of the DPR RI, such as Mochamad Hasbi Asyidiki Jayabaya, John Kenedy Azis, Endang Maria Astuti, Muhammad Husni, Delmeria, H. Achmad, Nanang Samodra, Iskan Qolba Lubis and Surahman Hidayat.
