Jakarta (November 9, 2024) - Heroes' Day is not only commemorated with a flag ceremony but also through various creative ways to commemorate the services of the heroes.

As was done by 180 high school students from various schools in DKI Jakarta, who attended an event entitled "Instilling Heroic Values" at the Sukarman Auditorium, National Library of the Republic of Indonesia, on Friday (11/8/2024).

The students from 18 different schools seemed solemn listening to the inspiring stories from three speakers, one of whom was Sandy Saputra.

Sandy Saputra (25) is a beneficiary of the Ministry of Social Affairs' Technical Implementation Unit. An accident in 2015 caused him to lose one of his hands.

A sense of despair haunted Sandy until finally, in 2017, he had the opportunity to take part in training at the Prof. Dr. Soeharso Center in Surakarta, a rehabilitation center for people with disabilities.

"I was down, feeling like life was useless.  But seeing my friends with disabilities there who don't even have two hands can still try, I feel like I should be more grateful, my struggle has just begun," said Sandy.

With a new spirit, Sandy continued computer and call center training at the Inten Soeweno Integrated Center in 2019. Thanks to the skills he acquired, Sandy is now working in a multinational company, proving that patience and perseverance can bring success, even with limitations.

"When everyone is competing to improve themselves with various beauty treatments, then we who are lacking must also compete to achieve a goal. Therefore, our shortcomings will be forgiven," Sandy's message to the students.

Another figure who inspires the students is Grandma Nuraeni (76). In her old age, Grandma Nuraeni has a noble ideal to build the future of the nation. As a beneficiary of the Pangurangi Takalar Center, she teaches English to around 80 children around the center. She often quotes the adage "student today, leader tomorrow," believing that the future of the nation must be prepared, even through simple steps like what she did.

In addition to Sandy and Nenek Nuraeni, the story of Alfin Dwi Novemyanto also captivated the students. Alfin, who lives with a single mother, has experienced the bitterness of life. Let alone the dream of going to school, the dream of getting decent food was a luxury for Alfin and his family.

Raised from the hard work of his mother who worked as a scavenger, Alfin did not give up. He became one of the best students and was determined to continue his education. Now, Alfin is studying as a master's student in Law at Gadjah Mada University.

In front of the students, Alfin advised, "Don't be motivated to take action but take action so that others are motivated."
