KUYAWAGE (August 10, 2022) - The assistance at the Disaster Management Post in Tiom, Lanny Jaya Regency, Papua has been distributed on Monday (8/8). A happy face was depicted by one of the children who received the second phase of assistance from the Ministry of Social Affairs for residents in Kuyawage District.

"Thank you, the food is a lot. There are clothes too, I can change clothes," said Matthew.

After the first phase of the Ministry of Social assistance was distributed last week (1/8), now the second phase of the Ministry of Social assistance which arrived at the Disaster Management Post in Tiom, Lanny Jaya Regency has been distributed on Monday (8/8).

Assistance continues to distributes for people in Kuyawage District, Lanny Jaya Regency, Papua, which have been hit by extreme weather since July 2022.

The second phase of assistance is in the form of 2,000 ready-to-eat food packages, 2.8 tons of rice, 500 pieces of children's clothing, 250 pieces of adult men's clothing, 250 pieces of adult women's clothing and 1,000 blankets.

The third phase of assistance has also arrived at the Disaster Management Post in Tiom. The aid in the form of 2.5 tons of rice is ready to be distributed to Kuyawage District.

This extreme weather phenomenon experienced by the community in Kuyagawe District has caused crop failure. As a result, the availability of food is running low, it has even led to starvation.

This news immediately got the attention of various parties, one of which was the Ministry of Social Affairs. Since this news was received in July 2022, Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini mobilized his staff to send some assistances.

The assistance distribution process was closely monitored by the Police of Lanny Jaya and the Regional Secretary of Lanny Jaya Regency. This is to ensure that aid arrives without any problems to the people in Kuyawage District.

Based on information obtained from the Regional Secretary of Lanny Jaya Regency, Tendien Wenda by telephone, his party carried out strict surveillance because road access was quite dangerous.

"Road access is not like a village, but beyond the village, wilderness, trees, cliffs and ravines. The terrain is quite dangerous, so we have to secure the guests (Ministry of Social Affairs), as well as the assistance, lest an accident occurs, so that the goods are scattered and do not arrive," Tendien said.

Assistance is escorted to the limit of the road (meeting point). "We dropped the aid from the road. We didn't deliver it to Kuyawage Village, but to the meeting point because the road after the meeting point could not be passed by vehicles, only a footpath," he said.

One or two days before the aid arrived at the meeting point, the residents of Kuyawage Village were given information to collect assistance at the meeting point.

Residents took the aid directly at the meeting point and carried it to their village by carrying it on their shoulders. This is because the road from the meeting point to the Kuyawage District can only be walked on foot.

The Regional Secretary of Lanny Jaya Regency gave his appreciation to the Ministry of Social Affairs which was quick to respond to the situation in Lanny Jaya and Kuyawage District.

"As representatives of the local government and the community, we give our highest appreciation to the Social Minister who is responsive to the situation in the Kuyawage District. Thanks to this assistance, the community can meet their food needs," he said.

In the long term, the Ministry of Social Affairs will maintain community food security, especially when facing food scarcity. For this purpose, the Ministry of Social Affairs will build social granaries in several districts in Papua.
