TOBA (27 April 2021) - The economic level of Beneficiary Families (KPM) of the Family Hope Program (PKH) has increased, thanks to the management of waste banks carried out by PKH beneficiaries in Tampahan District, Toba Regency, North Sumatra.

The Waste Bank in Tampahan District is the collaboration with the IAS (Indah, Asri, Senyum) Main Waste Bank from Toba, Balige District which already has three waste bank units serving 17 villages and kelurahan (sub-districts). Namely waste banks in Pardede Onan Village, Tambunan Lumban Pea Village, and Silalahi Village Pagar Batu.

"With the number of Waste Bank Units, inorganic waste management will become better and even have a positive impact on the financial condition of PKH Beneficiary Families," said PKH Coordinator Task Executor for Toba Regency, Rammen Andino Sinaga, on Tuesday (27/4/2021).

The collected waste is divided into two categories. Those that can still be recycled are made into handmade bags while those that cannot be recycled will be sold directly.

Lisken Tampubolon, as one of the participants of a Waste Bank in Tampahan District, admitted that the Waste Bank effectively increased his income.

"I just realized that waste has economic value to increase our family income," said Lisken.

He explained on how he managed waste. The first step is to separate the waste into recycled and non-recycled. Non-recycled waste such as plastic and aluminum foil waste can be used to make useful items. The next step is the Main Waste Bank (IAS) weighs the waste and provides an invoice for the number of waste and their price.

"Later, when there are lots of payment invoices, I can buy internet credit packages for my children’s online classes," added Lisken.

Rammen explained that the unit's waste bank activity provides financial empowerment and environmental cleanliness as a derivative activity from the Family Capacity Building Meeting (P2K2). This is a mandatory activity for KPM PKH to participate once a month.

"The immense benefit of waste makes KPM PKH enthusiastic. Up until now, there are 209 families participate in waste banks, "said Rammen.

In order to preserve the environment, the Waste Bank activities, he continued, also encourage the minimal use of plastic in everyday life.

"We hope that the waste bank units of Tampahan District and Balige District will have a positive impact on PKH beneficiary families in each district," said Rammen.
