BEKASI CITY (April 6th, 2024) – The enthusiasm to continue fighting to support his family started to be felt by Surahman (37), a resident who lives in Sumur Batu Village, Bantar Gebang District, Bekasi City. Surahman experienced problems in his right eye due to pieces of rubbish waste.

On the trash mountain of Bantar Gebang, Surahman earned his living every day. For 10 years, Surahman has been in this business to support his family. The condition of the landfill which was full of dust and flying dirt damaged the vision in his right eye.

Surahman admitted that he had not been able to see clearly for almost a year. Initially, it only felt sore when working, over time, white dots appeared on his eyeballs. After feeling pain in his eyes, Surahman checked himself into the nearest health center. According to the doctor's statement, Surahman needed further action for surgery.
The news about Surahman was caught in media scanning and followed up by the Ministry of Social Affairs (MoSA) through "Pangudi Luhur" Integrated Center in Bekasi. MoSA visited Surahman’s house to carry out a comprehensive assessment. MoSA examined Surahman at Bekasi City Hospital Eye Clinic.

"After an examination, Surahman was diagnosed with leukoma on the cornea which was caused by infection due to splashes of waste and failure to do quick and appropriate treatment," said dr. Ethics Widhiastuti, Sp.M.

Although no surgery could be performed as scar tissue had formed, the doctor gave eye drops to reduce complaints, such as dry and lumpy eyes, and advised Surahman to maintain his body's immunity.

Psychosocial support is also provided to keep Surahman enthusiastic, while ATENSI assistance in the form of basic needs, nutrition and personal hygiene was also provided. On March 18th, 2024, Surahman underwent cataract surgery after an examination at Mata Kirana Polyclinic RSCM.  Meanwhile, on March 30th, 2024, he was also given entrepreneurship assistance to support him selling egg martabak and school supplies for Surahman's first child.

"Thank you to MoSA for helping us get up to fight and revive my and my family's enthusiasm to face this situation," said Surahman emotionally.
