BEKASI (25 August 2023) – One of the fundamental challenges for persons with visual sensory disabilities is their ability to recognize the environment.  The malfunctioning of their visual abilities makes it difficult for them to recognize objects around them.

As a result, they can crash into objects in the environment, and hinder their mobility.  For this reason, they need guidance on how to optimize the other five senses, so as to help improve mobility.

To help persons with visual sensory disabilities improve access to their social environment, Pangudi Luhur Integrated Center (STPL) Bekasi provides a service called environmental orientation.

"The aim of this environmental orientation is so that beneficiaries are able to carry out activities independently, such as going to the toilet, going to the kitchen to get food, and going to various facilities at STPL without having to depend on other people," said STPL Environmental Orientation Instructor Ferdo Suhantono (24/8).

The target, according to Ferdo, is that eventually, he will be able to travel on his own according to the desired destination.  "Practically, this environmental orientation uses five methods, namely touching, hearing, feeling, smelling, and seeing," said Ferdo.

One of the service recipients is Sa'ani.  This resident of Tambun, West Java, has difficulty recognizing his surroundings.  Because he doesn't know the techniques for recognizing his environment, he often crashes into objects around him.

"First I wanted to go to a friend's house to play with, even though it wasn't far. Where I was going (I don't know), I already hit a wall. Because I still don't know the technique," said this 40-year-old woman, while blushing.

After almost two weeks of attending environmental orientation, I felt there was progress in getting to know the surrounding environment with guidance from the instructor.

"After studying with Bro Vishnu, I already know the technique for protecting the upper and lower body by using crossed arms in front of the face and stomach," he said with a look of pride on his face.

Now, he continued, I am no longer afraid, if I hit my forehead it won't hit the pole because it is protected by my hand.
