BANDUNG (10 OCTOBER 2022) – Adi looks serious about arranging a bunch of snacks in front of him. His hand seems agile sorting those light meals into some arrays.
In the same room, snack packages are still lined up. ”Those big ones are for stock, if they are out of stock, the small ones, will be packed later from those stocks,” he said, pointing to several big packages of snacks that were half finished.
Adi recently rented a small outlet in Junti Ketapang Market, Caringin, Bandung. He received startup capital from Ministry of Social Affairs which was provided through The Center of Wyata Guna in Bandung.
This Bandung guy looked neat. He wore a black-maroon batik shirt and he matched it with long chinos and black sneakers. No one will believe that the young man whose full name is Adiat Barkah Nasrullah, is previously an ex-psychotic.
At that time. He had just attended the commemoration of World Mental Health Day in Bekasi. At the event, Adi had the opportunity to meet The Ministry of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini who directly handed over Social Rehabilitation Assistance (ATENSI) to him.
Since January 2022, Adi has been undergoing rehabilitation at The Center of Wyata Guna in Bandung. After 8 years of the process, Adi began to introspect. This music lover started to find a direction in life. “During my rehabilitation at the center of Wyata Guna in Bandung, I was taught to play guitar and vocals, and there was a coach. By any chance, I love music. I want to continue to study music because I want to be a musician someday,” said Adi when met at his sister’s residence in Soreang, Bandung, recently.
However, he realizes that music is not his way of life. Adi was willing to take part in entrepreneurship skill training. “In the center, I was directed to do selling activities. From there, I work on it. You see, if I keep playing music, while I don’t have a place to live, I can’t go back to the past, busking in the streets. I don’t want to. I want to change my life for the better,” he said.
The atmosphere of love, with a touch of humanity at the center, was able to lift Adi’s spirit. The guidance, counseling, and many other activities, as well as the way he was treated, made Adi feel his existence is recognized and respected.
“Many thanks to Wyata Guna, the social workers, and all of the employees. There, I was guided to be a better person. Alhamdulillah, I can apply what they taught to me to do,” he said.
After rehabilitation, Adi was declared ready to be reunified with his family in Caringin, Bandung Regency. During reunification, Adi was welcomed by his sister and his brother-in-law. “Alhamdulillah, there is progress. Hopefully, in the future, he can be independent, the business can run smoothly, and really can be successful like other people,” said Adi’s sister, Diah Wardia Fajriani.
Diah cares about his youngest brother. Every twice or three times a week, she paid a visit to Adi in Wyata Guna. “He is my brother, we shared the same blood, who was entrusted by my late parents. Until forever, he is my brother, no matter what,” Diah said while wiping her tears.
Diah could not hold back her tears while she recalled her parents’ struggle in searching for cure for Adi since his symptom firstly appeared in 2007.
On a different occasion, the Social Worker who is in charge to handle Adi, Dadang Yuda Karsono, said that Adi’s reunification had gone through the standardized procedure, namely a case conference or meeting to discuss cases to decide further services for Adi.
“In the CC, he got positive reviews from the employees. Like in the ATENSI Creation Center (SKA), he has been able to manage money, and also do cleaning, so that we decided that he deserves to be returned to the society,” said this Senior Social Worker.
Staying in Wyata Guna for four months, after being declared healthy by the doctor, Adi managed a minimarket in the center. To develop economic independence, MoSA provides business capital assistance worth IDR 6.3 million to open a new traditional snack shop.
Adi’s story began when he was 18 years old. At the time, Adi had an extreme increase in body temperature which forced him to be hospitalized for 40 days. The medical procedure was done by taking brain fluid and the spinal cord twice.
However, after going back and forth to the hospital, Adi's illness was never identified. The 33-year-old man has difficulty controlling his behavior, and tends to be impulsive and irritable. He also often experiences delusions that lead to aggressive behavior.
Various methods have been used by the family, from medical to traditional, but never came to fruition. This condition was exacerbated by the death of his mother, followed by his father. The psychological burden was immeasurable, Adi was getting lost.
However, now Adi can breathe a sigh of relief, he has successfully passed that dark period. Now, he just wants to be a successful person who can make the people around him happy.
