SURAKARTA (December 17, 2022) – The night is getting late, but customers of eRCe Sentra Kreasi ATENSI (SKA) Manahan Solo Cafe still enjoy hanging out.  They gathered and chatted while enjoying the dishes served at the table.

Behind the kitchen bar, a man is preparing drink orders.  Using his left hand, he mixes the coffee ingredients and pours them carefully into a glass.  Meanwhile, his dislocated right hand rested on the table.

Even though it was only one hand, his movements were nimble and measured.  Each ingredient is poured with the right measure.  The taste is consistent.  Accompanied by the roar of the espresso coffee machine, immediately two large glasses of matcha latte and matcha milk were served.

That was Haris Setiawan, barista and cashier at SKA Manahan Solo eRCe Cafe.  He is a person with disabilities who has been coached by Integrated Center Prof.  Dr.  Soeharso Surakarta.

Haris participated in the selection of SKA eRCe managers as a barista after a year of being laid off due to the COVID-19 pandemic by the textile factory where he worked.  The 30-year-old man learned about the selection information before the opening of SKA eRCe Manahan at the end of August 2021.

Together with 9 PPKS (Social Welfare Service for Persons in Need) graduates from Integrated Center, Prof.  Dr.  Soeharso, and local LKS, Haris participated in various trainings as 'provision of knowledge' in managing SKA eRCe Manahan, including making cafe menus, operating cash registers and espresso machines, financial management and customer service.

"At that time I was taught how to make coffee before the inauguration of SKA Manahan. I learned really from scratch because there was nothing basic," said Haris when met by the Public Relations Bureau Team at SKA eRCe Manahan Solo on Thursday night (8/12).

Even though they have to start everything from scratch, this person with a disability feels happy because they gain new knowledge about how to manage a business.  Various obstacles regarding coffee making had confused him, but he immediately looked for a way out.

"At that time I was still unfamiliar with how to make delicious coffee, how to brew different coffee beans. In the end, I shared with more friends," said the man from Karanganyar.

As time went on, he got used to his new job as a barista.  It is undeniable that Prof.  Dr.  Soeharso six years ago had a big influence on him.

"At first I was a bit hesitant to enter the Center because of the lack of dissemination of the program so I didn't know much. I thought the Integrated Center was the same training place in general, but it turned out to include physical, mental, spiritual, vocational, community relations, and others," said Haris.

During the year, Haris attended various trainings at Integrated Center. Prof. Dr.  Soeharso.  He gained new knowledge and skills as well as a job after ending the training period.

"I gave information about the Soeharso Center to the Mobile Social Service Unit officers. I said that the Center's services were free and that the beneficiaries were educated from A-Z to channeled into work," said Haris.

In line with the theme of International Day of Disabilities 2022 'Meaningful Participation Towards Sustainable Inclusive Development', Haris encouraged friends with disabilities to be empowered and independent.

"We live in this world, we must have goals and hopes. People with disabilities don't need to be insecure and just stay at home but can explore the outside world to strengthen their mentality. If you still feel insecure about leaving the house, you can first accompany your parents. Then slowly you can do it," said Haris.

Working for more than a year at SKA eRCe Manahan Solo, Haris hopes to open his own business and develop his potential and abilities.

“I want to maximize the skills I got from training and experience managing a cafe.  "Hopefully it can be realized soon," said Haris with a smile.

SKA eRCe Manahan as a One-Stop Enterprise

eRCe Cafe is one of six outlets at SKA eRCe Manahan Solo.  Inaugurated by Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini and the Mayor of Surakarta Gibran Rakabuming Raka on August 30, 2021, SKA eRCe Manahan Solo also provides laundry services, screen printing, cooperatives, batik outlets and typical Solo souvenir outlets.

"We are grateful to have skilled staff according to the required capabilities and loyal to us. They work according to their respective duties and capacities," said Head of SKA eRCe Manahan Solo Tutik Nurning Dyah Kusumawardani.

Managed by 10 PPKS and 3 Non-Civil Servant Government Employees (PPNPN), Tutik explained that all outlets at SKA eRCe are run by all SKA employees according to their respective duties and capacities.

"So they have different abilities, some have physical disabilities, some are vulnerable groups, so we place them according to their skills.  "The work system is divided into 2 shifts every day," said Tutik.

Operating every day from 08.30 - 22.30 WIB, eRCe Cafe's turnover reaches tens of millions per month.  The profits obtained are divided equally every three months according to the agreement of the 13 employees.

"One of the goals of SKA is to improve the welfare level of vulnerable groups.  "They have a sense of ownership of SKA, so they are not workers who work at SKA," said Acting Head of Integrated Center Prof. Dr. Soeharso, Rachmat Koesnadi.

Thanks to the sense of ownership, the beneficiaries are challenged to improve the entrepreneurial and vocational abilities they already have through the training provided.

In the future, SKA eRCe Manahan Solo is expected to become the business area that the people of Solo Raya need.

"This is not easy because we still need to do better promotions. Of course, this needs to be supported by all aspects, especially Public Relations Bureau of Ministry of Social Affairs and Prof. Dr. Soeharso Integrated Center," said Rachmat.
