TANA TORAJA (April 17th, 2024) – Even though it is still Eid, Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini did not postpone her working visit to inspect the location of the landslide disaster in Tana Toraja Regency, Wednesday (17/4). The Minister’s arrival was to see directly the condition of the survivors, provide compensation to the heirs of the victims who died, and ensure that the needs of the affected communities were met. Previously, the Ministry of Social Affairs (MoSA) team had already been deployed to the field.
The Minister took the air route from Jakarta and stopped for a moment in Makassar, then continued the journey by helicopter to Tana Toraja. Air travel was chosen because arriving at Tana Toraja takes 8 hours by land from Makassar City, crossing many hills.
Arriving at the location, the Minister met the victim's family and asked about the needs of the heirs. "What do you need, mam? I'll help you later," said the Minister, asking each of the victim's family.
The Minister was also seen instructing her staff to make a note of community needs. To related stakeholders, the Minister requested that data be collected and submitted to MoSA. Most of the victims' families need business capital because some of the victims who died were breadwinners.
This was confirmed by the Head of Maggau Village in Makale District, Tana Toraja Regency, Lukas Duma Tarukkada. "What they need is related to the economy," he said.
The welfare of the families left behind becomes the Minister’ special concern. Therefore, the Minister uses an individual approach so that the family's economic continuity is maintained.
Previously, the Minister had distributed initial post-incident assistance from Tana Toraja Regency Social Service warehouse on April 13th, 2024. Further assistance was sent from several logistics warehouses in Makassar City.
The various types of assistance that have been distributed by MoSA to handle landslides in Tana Toraja include roll-up tents, portable family tents, multi-purpose tents, mattresses, blankets, portable toilets, water purifiers, power bank generators, family kitchen equipment, family kits, kids wear, ready-to-eat food, children's food and rice, with a total aid value of IDR 713.6 million.
