Twice in Manado, the Social Affairs Minister Persuades Flood and Landslide Victims to be Willing to Relocate

MANADO (January 31, 2023) - Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini asked residents who live on riverbanks and areas prone to floods and landslides in Manado City, North Sulawesi, to be willing to relocate to safer places.
This was emphasized again by Minister of Social Affairs Risma when visiting locations affected by floods and landslides in Manado City, today (31/1), following her visit two years ago to Manado City for a similar case.
"I have been a minister for two years, I have been here twice with the same cases, namely floods, landslides, and deaths. In 2021, when I first became a minister, I came here, there were two victims if I'm not mistaken. Now, there are even more, five people. Then, how many more people will become victims?" said the Minister of Social Affairs in Manado City, on Tuesday (31/1).
In January 2021, when she first received her mandate as the Minister of Social Affairs, Risma visited Manado City to inspect a similar disaster with an impact that was not much different from the current disaster.
This was emphasized again by Minister of Social Affairs Risma when visiting locations affected by floods and landslides in Manado City, today (31/1), following her visit two years ago to Manado City for a similar case.

"If you look at the contours of the land like this, it is risky and unsuitable. Don't make excuses, whatever the reason, then don't want to move. Unfortunately, the number of victims has increased. Come on, what are we looking for again?" she said convincingly.
Through discussions with the Mayor of Manado, and several Forkompimda (Regional Leadership Coordination Forum) who were also present to accompany the Minister of Social Affairs, Manado City Government had prepared shelter for Manado residents who live in areas prone to floods and landslides.
"After I discussed with the Mayor, regarding those whose housing conditions are dangerous, the City Government has prepared places, there are 3,000 units," said the Minister of Social Affairs.
Regardless of the factors behind residents' reluctance to move into these residences, the Minister of Social Affairs wants residents to prioritize safety.
"Our main concern is safety. It is above everything. If we don't anticipate now, a disaster occurs, and everything can end instantly," she said.
During her visit, the Minister of Social Affairs handed over compensation to five heirs of victims who died as a result of the flood and landslide disaster in Manado City. The five heirs received compensation of IDR15 million each/casualty at the POUK Ekklesia Kalama Lantamal VIII Manado Church.
"If you look at the contours of the land like this, it is risky and unsuitable. Don't make excuses, whatever the reason, then don't want to move. Unfortunately, the number of victims has increased. Come on, what are we looking for again?" she said convincingly.

Meanwhile, basic food assistance was also distributed, including 20 kg premium rice per package, 1 liter cooking oil, 10 packs of instant noodles, 2 cans of 425 gr sardines, 1 pack of 165 gr of ground coffee, 1 pack of 300 gr of biscuits, 1 bottle of 195 ml of sweet soy sauce, 1 bottle of tomato sauce 195 ml, and 1 pack of biscuits 235 gr.
Meanwhile, the ATENSI aid distributed at the same location consisted of 20 kg of rice, 2 pcs of 650 gr biscuits, 2 packs of eggs, 1 pack of 2-liter cooking oil, 1 pc of 250 gr honey, 5 bottles of 300 ml liquid soap, 5 pcs of toothbrushes, 5 pcs of 75 gr toothpaste, 2 packs of 800 gr detergent, and 12 cans of 155 gr sardines.
The former Mayor of Surabaya also took the time to greet the children at the Psychosocial Support Services (LDP) post at KGPM Sidang Petra Cempaka. While entertaining, the Minister of Social Affairs directly distributed food packages and children's toys. They were crowded together, fighting for toys from Social Affairs Minister Risma's hands.
Furthermore, Risma checked the Ministry of Social Affairs' public kitchen at the "Tumou Tou" Center in Manado. This public kitchen, managed by Disaster Response Volunteer (Tagana) personnel from Manado and Bitung City, fulfilled the food needs of affected residents after the disaster.
As is known, floods hit several sub-districts in Manado City, North Sulawesi on Friday (27/1). This flood along with the landslides was caused by high rainfall until the river basin (DAS) of Lake Tondano overflowed.
As a result of this disaster, hundreds of houses were submerged in water, affecting thousands of heads of families (KK). A total of five people were declared dead. They were swept away by the river current and buried by landslides.

Based on data from the Directorate of Social Protection for Natural Disaster Victims (PSKBA), hundreds of houses were flooded and spread across 34 villages/sub-districts and 9 districts. Meanwhile, the landslide disaster affected 63 families across 22 villages/sub-districts and 7 districts in Manado.
