MAKASSAR (April 28, 2023) - Wardi (47) and Harisah (35) could breathe a sigh of relief. The operation to install a tube on their second child who suffered from hydrocephalus, Al Malik Wardi, went well, Wednesday (19/4).

Even so, the baby, who was not even a month old, cannot be visited yet, even by his parents. This tiny baby still needed to be treated intensively in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) room at Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Makassar.

Information about a baby with hydrocephalus in Polewali Mandar Regency, West Sulawesi, which had been constrained by costs, first broadcasted through the media.

At the direction of the Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini, three Technical Implementation Units (UPT) in Sulawesi, were instructed to immediately assist efforts to treat the baby's illness.

The three UPTs of the Ministry of Social Affairs (MoSA) referred to were Regional V Social Welfare Education and Training Center (BBPPKS) Makassar, "Wirajaya" Center in Makassar and "Nipotowe" Center in Palu.

"We, "Nipotowe" Center in Palu,"Wirajaya" Center and BBPPKS in Makassar, are coordinating to help deal with the conditions experienced by baby Al Malik and accompanying his parents during the treatment process," said the nurse from "Nipotowe" Center in Palu, Wiwik Windiarsih, by telephone, Thursday (27/4).

Wiwik said, before receiving surgery at RSUP Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Makassar, Al Malik's parents had a financial problem when they wanted to bring their baby to Makassar from Polewali Mandar Regional General Hospital (RSUD).

"Even though, the medical expenses are borne by the BPJS, the parents are constrained by accommodation and costs for their daily needs while in Makassar. So, they are delaying referring Al Malik," said Wiwik.

Responding to this obstacle, BBPPKS Makassar then bore the full cost of transportation, including accommodation by facilitating room space at the training center for families to stay overnight, and daily family meal needs while in hospital.

"Accommodation is provided at the training center, then transportation from Polman to Makassar, including back and forth to and from the hospital, and daily meals, all are borne by BBPPKS Makassar," said Wiwik.

BBPPKS Makassar also helped pick up Wardi and Harisah's first child, Dimas (6), who was left with his grandmother in Polewali Mandar due to illness.

"Last April 16, Dimas was sick. He had a fever. Incidentally, it was still school holidays too. So, his mother returned to Polman to pick up Dimas. BBPPKS facilitated the pick-up," she continued.

Meanwhile, "Wirajaya" Center in Makassar provided assistance in the form of pocket money to the baby's parents while they were in the hospital. Then, "Nipotowe" Center in Palu supported the basic needs of baby that are not covered by BPJS, such as diapers, wet wipes, dry wipes, baby blankets and baby clothing.

Previously, Al Malik was born on March 31, 2023 by caesarean section at Polewali Mandar Hospital when he was just 7 months old.

The operation had to be carried out right away because the mother had ruptured her waters during an ultrasound examination. So, the doctor suggested the baby to be born immediately through surgery.

The baby, weighing 2.4 kg, was born with an enlarged head and was diagnosed with hydrocephalus. This unusual condition in the baby began to be seen in the womb when the womb was still 6 months old.

Since then, Al Malik was treated at Polewali Mandar Hospital before finally being assisted with financing and accommodation so he could be referred to Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Makassar for further treatment on April 13, 2023.

More than a week since leaving the operating room, on April 19, 2023, Wiwik said, until now, Al Malik had not been able to be visited so the parents were still waiting for the follow-up action from the hospital.

"Assistance to parents and monitoring of baby from BBPPKS and "Wirajaya" Center in Makassar are also carried out every day while the baby is still in the NICU room," she added.

Furthermore, after the efforts in handling Al Malik was completed, MoSA also tried to provide further interventions for the baby's parents in the form of entrepreneurial assistance.

"The mother of the baby, who takes care of the household on a daily basis, will be given business capital to sell retail gasoline or 3 kg gas cylinders that are deposited at their grandmother's house, considering the condition of Al Malik's parents' stilt house, which is not proper and not strategic," said Wiwik.

Regarding the assessment of the parents of Al Malik measuring 3x7 square meters in Polewali Mandar, whose condition was not proper and without toilets, it would also be considered for repair, in coordination with the local government.
