JAKARTA (11 January 2024) – Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini urges parents to embrace and support their disabled child, rather than conceal them. The Minister made this statement during her meeting with individuals who have hearing and speech disabilities at Mulya Jaya Center in Jakarta on Thursday (11/1).
”Parents should not hide their disabled children,” she said.
Supporting the independence of children with disabilities is crucial. They show promise for success with proper development. Minister Risma has advised all centers of Ministry of Social Affairs (MoSA) to offer a comprehensive social rehabilitation program tailored to the needs of persons with disabilities.
“I inquire with the head of centers. You must do this. We’re helping truly capable people,” she said.
According to Minister Risma, it is evident that numerous individuals with disabilities possess the ability to achieve their full potential and successfully compete in the job market. Minister Risma urges centers to develop vocational training curricula that align with job market demand, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for employment opportunities.
Minister Risma emphasized the exclusive responsibility of MoSA in handling persons with disabilities, as there is no other government body dedicated to this task. MoSA ability to effectively support and assist individuals with disabilities is of utmost importance.
One of MoSA centers that effectively provides social rehabilitation programs for individuals with disabilities is the Mulya Jaya Center in Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta. Many of the recipients are now actively pursuing careers in the professional realm. One individual is Hany, a 30-year-old person from Depok who has hearing and speech disabilities. She underwent culinary arts training at the Mulya Jaya Center. Currently, Hany is employed at a well-known fast-food chain in Indonesia.
Another person who benefits is Ronald, 37 years old. Just like Hany, Ronald also faces challenges with hearing and speech disabilities. After being let go from Sentra Mulya Jaya, Ronald found employment at a factory and has since achieved a level of financial independence that allows him to own a house, car, and motorcycle.
