MAJENE (January 16, 2021) - The “Gau Mabaji” Elderly Center in Gowa carried out an emergency response to the earthquake disaster in Majene Regency and Mamuju Regency, West Sulawesi Province by going directly to the disaster site.

Previously, on Friday (15/01) an earthquake measuring 6.2 magnitude occurred at 02.28 WITA. The epicenter of the earthquake was 6 kilometers northeast of Majene Regency, West Sulawesi Province. The tremors of the earthquake were felt as far as Mamuju Regency, Makassar City, to Palu City.

Based on this information, the Ministry of Social Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia through the Directorate General of Social Rehabilitation, dispatched a disaster emergency response case response team. The Technical Implementation Units (UPT) of the Directorate General of Social Rehabilitation in South Sulawesi Province are three Balai and two Loka, namely the Elderly Social Rehabilitation Center (BRSLU) "Gau Mabaji" in Gowa, the "Wirajaya" Makassar Social Rehabilitation Center for Persons with Disabilities, "Toddopuli" Social Rehabilitation for Children in Need of Special Protection (BRSAMPK) Makassar, "Pangurangi" Social Rehabilitation Center for Drug Abuse Victims (LRSKPN) Takalar, and "Pangurangi" Social Rehabilitation Workshop (LRSODHIV) Takalar.

In addition, the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT)  in Central Sulawesi also participated, namely the "Nipotowe" Palu Social Rehabilitation Center for People with Intellectual Disabilities (BRSPDI)

Wahidin, Head of the “Gau Mabaji” Elderly Center in Gowa, who also went directly to the location, conveyed the difficulty of the terrain to reach the disaster-affected location.

"The team of Center departed from Makassar City to the disaster site and traveled tens of kilometers with a travel time of approximately 16 hours to get to the disaster location due to bad weather conditions and also damaged road access due to the earthquake which caused landslides on the Poros Majen Mamuju road," said Didin.

The journey from Makassar City to Majene Regency, which normally can be taken in 7 hours, has now doubled because the emergency response team had to go through the districts worst affected by the earthquake in Majene Regency, namely Malunda District and three sub-districts in Mamuju Regency, namely Tapalang, Mamuju, and Symbolo.

Arriving at the disaster-affected location, the emergency response team from each Center and Loka provided assistance in the form of basic needs and special assistance for each beneficiary cluster being handled.

The assistance provided was handed over to the Social Office of West Sulawesi Province and collected at the Main Post belonging to the Social Service. This is intended to prevent looting and avoid unequal distribution of aid. A total of 10 people in the Main Command Post affected by the disaster received services and assistance from the Gowa "Gau Mabaji" Elderly Center.

Secretary of the Social Office of West Sulawesi Province, Suwaruh expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the assistance provided.

"We will collect the assistance provided at the Main Command Post for further distribution to crucial points that need it. We also really appreciate the high spirit of ladies and gentlemen to help others so that this assistance can get here through quite difficult area," said Suwaruh.

The solidarity given by the UPT Directorate General of Social Rehabilitation in South Sulawesi and Central Sulawesi Provinces is proof of their concern for sharing and empathizing with the earthquake disaster that occurred in Majene Regency and Mamuju Regency, West Sulawesi Province.
