BEKASI (July 2, 2022) - Family is like a land where it grows and
develops. Happy for those of us who can be with family until the end of life to
pick up. Then what about the grandparents who, for some reason, have to spend
their old age in the nursing home environment? Living in Social Institution for
Social Welfare Service Recipients (PPKS) until death comes, of course, is
not everyone's hope and dream. Living away from the family environment,
separated from loved and loving people, and living together with other elderly with
all their respective problems in a closed environment is certainly not an easy
thing.
It is not easy, because at old age, the body
begins to weaken and various types of complaints of pain and illness are
eroded, far from the reach of the warmth of the closest family, bearing the
pain of being alone in neglect. Not to mention the torment of feeling lonely over
the emptiness syndrome that plagues long days to spend the day. A syndrome that
arises from the disappearance of one by one or at the same time a loved family
member, whether because the children grow up and get married and then leave the
house, death, or the absence of someone to care for them in old age or other
reasons such as neglect. Abandonment due to the absence of guaranteed life and
livelihood in old age, the absence of a place to live, neglect by illness,
surrender, and various other reasons that become the background for the
existence of the elderly in Pangudi Luhur 1 Bekasi Integrated Center (STPL 1
Bekasi).
These various causes generally give rise to a tendency known as a
boundary situation, a situation that cannot be avoided. Like it or not, it must
be accepted, so that it often causes suffering. If the elderly are not able to
interpret suffering, then what is found is anger and denial of their bad luck,
which will make it difficult for them to interact with other residents of the
facility and their companions. On the other hand, if they can find homey while living
in the STPL 1 Bekasi, participating in various activities, they try to accept their
current condition and how to use their old age with various positive activities.
Finding the essence of themselves as healthy, strong, and dignified elderly.
STPL 1 Bekasi,
previously known to the public as Tresna Werdha Budhi Dharma Center, or nursing
house, is currently providing a system of social rehabilitation and habilitation
services. Following the Regulation of the Minister of Social Affairs
Number 1 of 2022, on Organization and Work Procedures within the Ministry of
Social Affairs, serving PPKS several 64 people consisting of 35 elderly
women and 29 elderly men, some of whom underwent bed ridden because they were
elderly and sick so they needed caregiver assistance for efforts to fulfill
their daily needs. STPL 1 Bekasi is a gathering place for the elderly to
undergo social rehabilitation and habilitation.
A synergistic effort in
which each other can provide mutual ecological social support to increase the
degree of well-being including physical, psychological, and psychosocial health.
PPKS can participate in various social rehabilitation activities with
meaningful activities with various light physical activities such as heart
exercise, diabetes exercise, tai chi, gardening, and various useful activities.
Art activities are
regularly scheduled with choir practice, singing, dancing, painting, and craft-making which are exhibited in a special room, which can also be purchased or
ordered. The money from the sale of handicrafts can be saved, increasing
self-confidence as a useful creative elderly entity.
Spiritual guidance is
carried out with assistance according to various religions and beliefs. There
are prayer rooms and chapel facilities that can be used as needed. For those
who like decorative plants and vegetables, a beautiful Elderly Garden is also
prepared that can be used in gardening activities.
The atmosphere of a
quiet afternoon on a weekend at the end of July was suddenly shattered by the
bustle of the roar of cars heading for STPL 1 Bekasi, which is located in the
westernmost area which is usually relatively quiet. There was a visit
from members of the Bekasi Indonesian Car Community (ICC), chaired by Bosep
Suherman. On this occasion, Suherman said that the ICC, which was formed on
January 19, 2022, has its address at Gramapuri Cibitung, Bekasi, West Java,
although it is still new, it has previously carried out sharing activities in
Jambi as well as tourism promotion.
By his
vision, my community my family, this time, we held a gathering with
grandparents by bringing gifts for them. Quiet days with infrequent visits or
almost no family visits, this afternoon became more colorful with the laughter
of grandma, grandpa, and visitors in the garden behind that place. Oma Lien said
that she was very happy to be visited, to talk to her like meeting her grandson
The event then continued
when Uncle Din was invited to see various superior and proud plants in the elderly
garden and took pictures together in a frame of the big family of ICC and STPL
1 Bekasi. To be a family does not always have to be in the same blood and offspring.
Sincerity, sharing care, and love for the neglected elderly are more important
than family. Assist the elderly in obtaining the fulfillment of the right to
psychosocial rehabilitation and social-ecological support from a caring
community. A visit from the ICC or other communities is expected to increase
our concern for the elderly, and together move to create a more independent,
healthy, and prosperous Indonesian Elderly. Healthy elderly, strong Indonesia!
