JAKARTA (October 13, 2020) - Advisor for the Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) of the Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs, Grace Batubara continues to voice the protection and fulfillment of the rights of persons with disabilities. One of the disabled communities that has received attention is Indonesia Rare Disorder (IRD).

IRD is an association of parents or families who have children with genetic disorders from birth that have an impact on functional disorders in daily life.

To this community, Grace Batubara handed over 50 packages of assistance to meet basic needs for parents. In addition, Grace Batubara also provided assistance in the form of toys and food, as well as other special needs according to the child's condition. The basic needs assistance package consists of rice, biscuits, cooking oil, instant noodles, sardines, sweetened condensed milk and refillable bath soap.

According to the Director of Social Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities, Eva Rahmi Kasim, the distribution of this assistance comes from the budget refocusing of the Directorate of Social Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities. The aid was given symbolically to 3 children with disabilities who have Seckel Syndrome, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and Blue Eye Syndrome.

This disorder has an impact on children's growth and development as well as functional disorders in daily life such as moving, speaking, seeing, hearing and even high dependence on assistive devices. This is because children with rare disorders experience progressive disorders.

Grace was delighted to be able to meet children with rare genetic disorders and their families, as well as the opportunity to distribute basic needs assistance as a form of concern for these children with special needs. Grace admitted that she felt how difficult it was to care for a child with special needs who had this rare genetic disorder, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Grace, the community of parents who have children with genetic disorders are selected parents who are entrusted with the responsibility to care for and protect these children. "This child is a special child, so parents must be enthusiastic and take good care of them," said Grace during a dialogue with the children's parents.

The head of the IRD community, Yola Tsagia said that the IRD Community accommodates parents who have children with rare genetic disorders. "Medically, 80% are genetic factors, the rest are environmental factors and others," he explained.

According to Eva, the Ministry of Social Affairs is here to provide support to this community and help access other service programs both within the Ministry of Social Affairs and outside the Ministry of Social Affairs, as well as in the community.

This effort is to ensure the growth and development of children with special needs. The aim is not only to reduce the worsening condition of the disorder experienced by children, but also to empower parents and families in accepting these children.

Also present at this event were the Head of the Dharma Wanita Persatuan of the Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs, Icuk Hartono Laras and other Dharma Wanita administrators and the Director of Social Rehabilitation of the Socially Impaired and Victims of Trafficking in Persons, Waskito Budi Kusumo.
