KOLAKA (October 19, 2020) - The Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs through the Kendari “Minaula” Elderly Center synergizes with the Southeast Sulawesi 13 Family Support Center (PUSAKA), namely Mandara Berjaya Elderly Social Welfare Agency (LKSLU) carrying out activities to strengthen the capacity of families and communities in caring for the elderly at home. The activity was carried out at the Baula District Office, Kolaka Regency which was attended by 30 participants, consisting of elderly families and LKSLU Management.

This activity is a form of introduction to the ATENSI Program which aims to increase the knowledge and ability of families to care for the elderly at home. This activity is in line with the ATENSI Program launched by the Directorate General of Social Rehabilitation of the Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs which is based on family and community.

Present at the activity, the Head of the Sub-Section for Social Services and Rehabilitation of “Minaula” Elderly Center Kendari, Kania Dewi, who was accompanied by Julius Muri, Arie Maria Puspita, and Pipit Supriyanto Febrian, and invited representatives of the Kolaka District Social Office.

"This activity is a form of government concern for the community to provide knowledge on how to care for the elderly at home," said Kania Dewi while opening the event.

To provide more understanding to elderly families and the community, Arie Maria Puspita, as a Social Worker, gave a discussion about old age. In the discussion, it is explained that the elderly who are above the age of 60 years will experience a decrease in bio-psycho-socio-spiritual. One way to deal with the elderly who are experiencing a decline is to respect and appreciate the elderly as parents. Being patient and taking a personal approach is the main key in dealing with the elderly.

Not only discussing the elderly, the activity also discussed about caring for the elderly at home. Pipit Supriyanto Febrian, as a nurse explained that based on BPS data, the March 2019 Susenas that the number of elderly people in Indonesia is up to 25.66 million. From this data, 40.64% of the elderly live with 3 generations and 27.3% live with their family and the rest live alone. From these data, it is known that the most elderly people live with their families. This indicates the need for knowledge and ability of the family in caring for the elderly at home.

In addition, the condition of the elderly who experience a decline will be faced with degenerative diseases. Where based on Pusdatin Kemenkes data in 2020, the disease that is often experienced by the elderly is hypertension (high blood pressure) with a percentage of 63.5%. Of course there needs to be additional knowledge for families and communities, how to prevent hypertension in the elderly. Through this activity, it is hoped that families can explore knowledge and information to find out tips and tricks for caring for the elderly at home.

Naipah (45), one of the elderly families, also revealed that this activity can provide a lot of knowledge about caring for the elderly at home, especially in caring for the elderly who have hypertension.

"Incidentally, my mother has high blood pressure, with this activity I came to understand that my mother must maintain her diet, and by consuming herbal medicines such as noni, cucumber, and melon can prevent hypertension," she said.

At the end of the activity, all participants did hypertension exercise, which can be practiced for the elderly in their respective homes. It is hoped that all participants who attend the activity are aware of and understand how to take care of the elderly at home, so that the elderly who are at home can still carry out their social functions.
