"Minaula" Elderly Center Kendari Holds Family Strengthening in Bombana

BOMBANA (October 6, 2020) - Strengthening the Capacity of Families and Communities in Social Care for the Elderly at Home is one of the efforts to increase participation and strengthen the capacity of families and communities in providing social care for the elderly.
“Minaula” Elderly Center in Kendari as the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) owned by the Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs carried out the "Capacity Strengthening for Family and Community Members in Providing Social Care for the Elderly at Home" in Bombana Regency on Tuesday (6/10/2020).
“This activity aims to provide knowledge and skills for family members and the community about various matters related to old age. It is hoped that through this activity, the attitudes and ways of the participants in caring for the elderly can change or improve. Thus, it is hoped that the welfare of the elderly will recover and increase to a better level,” explained Syamsuddin as Head of "Minaula" Elderly Center Kendari.
It was further explained that this activity is one of the manifestations of the Elderly Social Rehabilitation Assistance (ATENSI LU) Program of the Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs which is based on family and community. It is known that the best place for the elderly is in the family. Meanwhile, residential-based social care is a last resort.
The activity, which took place at the Elderly Social Service Agency (LKSLU) Secretariat of the Social Welfare Study Center, Lora Village, Mataoleo District, Bombana Regency, was attended by 20 elderly families and five social assistants from the local community who were gathered in LKSLU.
Acting as presenters were Syamsuddin, Jasman, Lucky Pilindo, and Wahyu Irawan. In addition to delivering material from resource persons, the activity was also carried out using practical methods, discussions, and questions and answers. The material provided included the role of the family in social care for the elderly at home and the importance of personal hygiene for the elderly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Syamsuddin added that, several important points related to the role of the family in improving the welfare of the elderly, among others, helping the elderly to manage or prepare food needs, transportation, communication and finances, regularly checking the elderly's health, helping or reminding the elderly to worship, not seeing the elderly as burden, prevent and reduce the risk of accidents in the elderly, maintain warmth in the family, seek advice and advice from the elderly, and facilitate the elderly to pursue their hobbies.
Further explained that, personal hygiene is the beginning in achieving health. Efforts to fulfill personal hygiene for the elderly such as bathing or skin care, oral, eye, nose, ear, hair, foot and nail care, as well as genitalia that are properly fulfilled will improve their health status and create beauty.

Ida (34), one of the participants said that this activity was very beneficial for her because she could gain knowledge about the role that family members should play in caring for their parents at home. She said that her mother was blind and no longer independent.
“I am grateful to be included in this activity. I gained knowledge about how we take care of the elderly and also became more aware of the importance of caring for the elderly. My parents are elderly. My mother is blind and can no longer carry out her usual activities. So, I will help and provide all their needs, thank you,” explained Ida.
Ahmad (24) as the Head of LKSLU said that this activity further broadened his and his fellow social assistants' knowledge about old age and helped them in carrying out the mentoring process for the elderly in the assisted areas.
“We are getting more insight and knowledge about sustainability. Especially in terms of the role of the family in caring for the elderly at home and the importance of personal hygiene for the elderly. Besides that, we are increasingly motivated to provide social assistance for the elderly and their families at home based on the intention and sincere spirit of worship," explained Ahmad.
From these activities, it is hoped that they can become competent care givers in caring for the elderly at home.
