JAKARTA (March 26, 2021) – The Melati Disability Center Jakarta responded quickly to information regarding Nurlaela, a 26-year-old physically disabled person who has swelling in her spine that causes her to become paralyzed and requires the help of others in her daily activities.

Previously, Siti Nurdjanah, Nurlaela's mother, submitted an application to the Ministry of Social Affairs so that her child would receive assistance. Following up on the request, the Director of Social Rehabilitation for Persons with Disabilities at the Ministry of Social Affairs gave directions to the Head of the Jakarta Melati Disability Center to conduct a needs assessment of Nurlaela.

Head of the Jakarta Melati Disability Center, Puti Chairida Anwar, assigned Suminah and Silvi Nurafni Octaviani, Social Workers to assess Nurlela's needs on Monday (15/3). Accompanied by the Disability Facilitator in Senen Subdistrict, the social worker at the Melati Disability Center in Jakarta asked her parents about Nurlaela's disability history. Siti Nurdjanah told her daughter's condition.

“My second child was born normal, ma'am. But when she was 2 months old, she started to get fever often and was hospitalized. Usually in a month it's up to 2 times the fever. It (the pain) continued until she (Nurlaela) was 5 years old. After 5 years, the frequency of fever began to decrease, but the progress was much different from that of her other friends. The doctor said my child had a swollen spine," said Siti.

“Nur went to school until she graduated from elementary school. She was actually happy to go to school, but because we didn't have the money, she didn't go to junior high school. Our income is mediocre. Nur's father only sells in the front stall, I also have to accompany Nur so only from the stall's income we survive," Siti whispered.

Siti knows that Nurlaela really wants to go to school. When there was an offer to join the free Kejar Paket B education program for Nurlaela, Siti immediately registered her child.

Nurlaela told her dreams to social workers. In the midst of her physical limitations, Nur never gave up. She thought that God was educating her by testing her through her shortcomings.

"I really want to be able to continue school, Mom. I aspire to be able to go to college. I like the Business Management major as I often see on TV. I want to have a business so I can help my parents. I pity mom, my parents have been taking care of me who was sickly since I was little. I want to be able to make them happy just once in my life,” Nur said in a stammering voice.

Beside Nur, her mother bowed her head with tears flowing uncontrollably at her daughter's words. Her mother understands that Nur's determination is unstoppable. She's a smart kid. Nur's school also once told Siti that Nur should continue to study because her academic ability is quite good. However, Siti and her husband had to suppress their child's wishes because the family's economy was getting tougher.

"I sell intestine chips, ma'am. I often ask Nur to help me pack these chips for sale. I did it to let her have activities at home," said Siti.

Based on the assessment of Nurlaela's needs, the social worker recommended that Nurlaela get an assistive device in the form of a special wheelchair to facilitate Nurlaela's daily mobility. Next, the social worker reports the results of a comprehensive assessment to the Head of the Melati Disability Center Jakarta .

Following up on the results of the assessment, Thursday (25/3) the Head of the Melati Disability Center Jakarta, Puti Chairida Anwar, was accompanied by the Coordinator of the Social Assessment and Advocacy Section and also social workers who had conducted an assessment for Nurlaela to visit Nurlaela's residence in Paseban Village, Senen, Central Jakarta to handed over the assistance of a multifunctional wheelchair equipped with a table and leg supports to facilitate Nurlaela's daily mobility.

"We provide this wheelchair so that Nurlaela can move more easily. We hope that this assistance can give Nurlaela a new spirit to realize her dreams. Cheers, kiddo, let's fight it together. Never give up and always pray, because God loves Nurlaela," said Puti when she handed the wheelchair to Nurlaela and her parents.

Bright eyes and a happy smile broke that afternoon from Nurlaela's face. She never thought that she could now have a sturdy wheelchair equipped with a table. She immediately asked his mother to put the laptop on her wheelchair table.

"Thank you ma'am, may Allah repay all the kindness of all staffs and give you more fortune," said Siti Haru.

The Melati Disability Center Jakarta ensures that the next mentoring role will be carried out by the Disability Facilitator in Senen District, Central Jakarta. The center will continue to coordinate with related parties to ensure that Nurlaela gets protection and that her basic rights are fulfilled as an Indonesian citizen.
