JAKARTA (17 July 2021) - The Ministry of Social Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia through Social Rehabilitation Center “Panasea” conducted outreach to three scavengers on Jalan Diponegoro, Central Jakarta, according to the direction of the Director General of Social Rehabilitation, Harry Hikmat, to respond quickly to social problems that occur in the community.

The outreach was carried out on Friday (16/7), by the joint Quick Response Team of Panasea Center, Handayani Center, and the Directorate General of Social Rehabilitation by conducting interviews and observations at the scavengers' homes to find out their needs and problems.

Usman (57), a scavenger who lives on a contract near the Kramat station along with one of his family members, stated that his scavenging work was uncertain during this pandemic because cardboard and drink bottles had decreased. In addition, he finds it difficult to get access to health, because his family card has been inactive for a long time.

There is also Erfan (70), a scavenger from Central Java who lives behind his collector boss's house with his seven children, but he continues to strive to be independent and fulfill his and his children's needs from the results of his scavenging work.

The outreach team has tried to persuade and facilitate the three scavengers to obtain residential/in rehabilitation social center services to get more comprehensive services, but these three people refused because they still wanted to work as scavengers and did not want to leave their families.

Like Rawani (71), he feels at ease living in his house, although it is very narrow, he is proud, because it is the result of his own sweat. In addition, he felt he could not bear to leave his wife who could not walk.

Furthermore, based on the results of the assessment and observation, the team tried to ensure that the scavengers could be given ATENSI services in the form of fulfilling a decent life, social assistance as well as accessibility support to be able to take care of their identity and obtain health services.
