SLEMAN (19 May 2020) - The Social Worker Service Unit (Sakti Peksos) who are members of the Outreach Team with the Municipal Police and the Sleman District Social Service carried out outreach activities for street children in response to information and community reports that there are many parents or families sitting in roadside by bringing children to beg from the passersby.
The outreach was in accordance with the direction of the Director General of Social Rehabilitation, Harry Hikmat, who stated that the Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs responded to displaced residents affected by COVID-19 through three approaches, namely the community approach, the Temporary Shelter (TPS) approach and the Social Rehabilitation Center approach. The Sleman Outreach Team approached the community directly to the streets through strengthening families affected by COVID-19, educating on the dangers, how to spread and how to avoid COVID-19.
Sakti Peksos Sleman, Subaidi said that currently the target of the Outreach Team is in the Caturtunggal area of Depok. "Four Sakti Social Workers in Sleman together with the Outreach Team managed to approach the community according to the direction of the Ministry of Social Affairs as many as 7 parents with children," explained Subaidi.
Based on the data collection, the seven families came from outside Sleman, namely Bantul, Yogyakarta, Gunungkidul, Magelang and Temanggung. This outreach is the first activity during the COVID-19 pandemic for family problems and children on the streets, so the intervention is still within the limits of warning and strengthening. The Outreach Team hopes that the results of the next outreach can synergize with all relevant parties in handling the impact of COVID-19.
"We also distributed masks and explained that the streets are not a good place for children's growth and development," explained Yuli, Sakti Peksos Sleman. All parents expressed the same thing that the reason for begging on the streets was because they were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic so it was difficult to make ends meet.
Sakti Peksos Sleman, Hery added that in today's follow-up plan, the Outreach Team will continue to provide supervision to parents and children so they are not on the streets. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is very dangerous for the health of families and children. "In addition, Sakti Peksos will try to provide assistance so that there is no exploitation of children on the streets that can interfere with children's growth and development," said Hery.
In addition to the Social Agency of Sleman Regency, the Outreach Team is also located at the Social Service of the City of Yogyakarta and the Social Service of the Province of DI Yogyakarta. Sakti Peksos Sleman, Nurul explained that the Social Agency Office of Sleman already has a committee for street children (anjal) and a committee for homeless people and beggars consisting of the Police, Municipal Police and the Keraton Police (psikaton). "Sakti Peksos participates in the committee because children have the potential to be secured in the Outreach Team network," explained Nurul.
