PASANGKAYU (July 9, 2020) - During the current pandemic, it is the right time for parents to give a lot of time they have to their children, especially for those with special needs. The participation of parents will provide positive changes to children with special needs. Many children with special needs have lost the attention of their parents, so they have not been able to become independent children.

Seeing this opportunity, the Center for the Social Rehabilitation of People with Intellectual Disabilities (BRSPDI) "Nipotowe" in Palu organized Parenting Skills activities for parents with intellectual disabilities. There are still many parents of people with disabilities who are sometimes indifferent, even often scolding and hitting children for not obeying or playing too much. Whereas people with intellectual disabilities do have a low mental age, so many prefer to just play games.

Astriyana Telaumbanua as a Social Worker at the Center, as well as a resource person at the activity, invited parents to educate children with disabilities through games. Involving children in every activity will be an exciting learning pattern. Parents must be able to liven up a cheerful atmosphere for their children. In addition, it is important for parents to understand that children with intellectual disabilities must be involved in socializing with the community. They also need friends, need to hang out, and interact. Children's independence is the main target of the learning process of children with special needs.

This Parenting Skill activity was attended by the Head of "Nipotowe" BRSPDI in Palu, Head of the Pasangkayu District Social Office, Mother of Difabel Pasangkayu, and 20 parents with intellectual disabilities. Mother of Difabel Pasangkayu, Herny Agus Ambo Djiwa, appreciates the Parenting Skill activity that was held at the Trisakti Hotel, Pasangkayu Regency this morning.

"Of course, I, as the head of the PKK movement and Mother with Disabilities, really appreciate events like this. It's our responsibility to see how our children are privileged. I consider them to have privileges, can be well received in the community, then can be useful for region, nation and country, and ready later if needed when they mingle in their environment can be well received," explained Herny who is also the wife of the Regent of Pasangkayu.

One participant also felt that the material presented by the resource persons was very useful for his family's life.

"Regarding the material that I listened to earlier, it was very helpful for my family's life, yes, to guide and nurture my children in the future. Hopefully, later on, from the knowledge I gained today together with my wife, I can practice it maybe at home so that in the future my child will more useful, more useful, hopefully, as explained earlier, they can become independent children in the future," said I Nyoman Suryana, as one of the parents of people with intellectual disabilities.

Persons with disabilities have the same rights as other children. They also want to be treated the same and get the same opportunities. There are many things they can do, but in a different way. They each have their own peculiarities in doing various things. Parents must be able to break the wall of limitations for children with special needs.
