GORONTALO (March 30, 2021) - The Ministry of Social Affairs through the "Tumou Tou" Rehabilitation Center for Persons with Disabilities in Manado conducts Social Rehabilitation Assistance (ATENSI) activities for Persons with Visual Disabilities in Gorontalo Regency and Gorontalo City.

This activity was carried out by involving the Putra Mandiri Foundation for Social Welfare Institutions (LKS), as partners from the Center. Participants in the activity were 130 people with visual impairments from Gorontalo Regency and City.

Prior to the implementation of the activity, all persons with disabilities have undergone an assessment carried out by social workers to see the needs, problems and potentials of persons with disabilities. Based on the results of the assessment, 32 people with visual impairments in Gorontalo City and Gorontalo Regency need to improve their skills, and 98 people need assistance and family care.

To overcome this, the "Tumou Tou" Center for the Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities collaborates with the Putra Mandiri Foundation in Gorontalo to provide Community-Based ATENSI Services for Persons with Visual Disabilities.

Head of the "Tumou Tou" Social Rehabilitation Center for Persons with Disabilities, Kamsiaty Rotty explained that these people with disabilities receive skills training according to their interests and talents. The skills training included music skills in the form of bands, tuna fish processing, making snacks made from bananas, and crafts from water hyacinth. This skills training also involves instructors from the Gorontalo Province Vocational Training Center (BLK) who are ready to assist Persons with Disabilities until they are able to produce. Furthermore, the products produced by people with disabilities will be marketed through the ATENSI Creation Center and souvenir shops in Gorontalo.

“Currently we are preparing an ATENSI Creation Center to market this product for people with disabilities. Especially for the blind band players, we have contacted several cafes in Gorontalo and they are ready to schedule the appearance of the band players to entertain cafe visitors this weekend," added Kamsiaty.

In addition to improving skills for 32 people with disabilities, "Tumou Tou" through the Putra Mandiri Foundation in Gorontalo also provides assistance and care for 98 families of people with visual impairments. They are taught to perform Mobility Orientation (OM) and perform daily activities (ADL). The provision of OM and ADL materials was provided by volunteers from the Putra Mandiri Foundation in Gorontalo, who had previously been trained by officers from the "Tumou Tou" Center Manado.

The chairman of the Gorontalo Putra Mandiri Foundation, Raden N. Sahi highly appreciates the breakthrough made by the Ministry of Social Affairs through the "Tumou Tou" Center. This activity is very beneficial for people with visual disabilities.

"We are very grateful to the Ministry of Social Affairs for carrying out this activity. This activity is very beneficial for Persons with Disabilities and their families. There is one interesting thing, yesterday there was a Person with Visual Disabilities named Yuli who was 24 years old and had never left her house since she was young because her family felt ashamed to have a family member with a disability. Through the OM training and family strengthening activities provided, currently Yuli can practice interacting with the outside world, gathering with fellow disabled people and the community," he concluded.
