KONAWE ISLANDS (October 11, 2020) - Strengthening the Capacity of Families and Communities in Social Care for the Elderly at Home is one of the efforts to increase participation and strengthen the capacity of families and communities in providing social care for the elderly.

Therefore, "Minaula" Elderly Center in Kendari as a Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) owned by the Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs carried out the "Capacity Strengthening for Family and Community Members in Providing Social Care for the Elderly at Home" in Konawe Islands Regency on Sunday (11/10/2020).

“This activity aims to provide knowledge and skills for family members and the community about various matters related to old age. It is hoped that through this activity, the attitudes and ways of the participants in caring for the elderly can change or improve. Thus, it is hoped that the welfare of the elderly will recover and increase to a better level,” explained Syamsuddin as Head of "Minaula" Elderly Center in Kendari.

It was further explained that this activity is one of the manifestations of the Elderly Social Rehabilitation Assistance (ATENSI LU) Program of the Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs which is based on family and community. It is known that the best place for the elderly is in the family. Meanwhile, residential-based social care is a last resort.

The activity which took place at the Lamoluo Village Hall, West Wawonii District, Konawe Islands Regency, was attended by 15 elderly families and five social assistants from the local community who were gathered in the Insan Kamil Elderly Social Welfare Agency (LKSLU).

Acting as presenters were Syamsuddin, Helma Parande, Riki Firmansyah, and Amalia Kristi. In addition to delivering material from resource persons, the activity was also carried out using practical methods, discussions, and questions and answers. The material provided included the role of the family in social care for the elderly at home and the importance of personal hygiene for the elderly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Syamsuddin added that several important points related to the role of the family in improving the welfare of the elderly include helping the elderly to manage or prepare for food, transportation, communication and financial needs, checking the elderly's health regularly, helping or reminding the elderly to worship, not seeing the elderly as a burden, prevent and reduce the risk of accidents in the elderly, maintain warmth in the family, seek advice and advice from the elderly, and facilitate the elderly to pursue their hobbies.

Further explained that, personal hygiene is the beginning in achieving health. Efforts to fulfill personal hygiene for the elderly such as bathing or skin care, oral, eye, nose, ear, hair, foot and nail care, as well as genitalia that are properly fulfilled will improve their health status and create beauty.

Mading, one of the participants said that this activity was very useful, especially when his wife's condition was always short of breath, unable to walk and was unable to see. From the material presented, he has an idea of ​​what can be done as a family in providing care to his wife.

Hariono as the Head of Insan Kamil LKSLU said that we are looking forward to this activity and we are very enthusiastic about this event. We as a new LKSLU, with events like this can add insight and knowledge for myself and other social assistants about old age and assist them in carrying out the mentoring process for the elderly in the assisted areas.

Muhammad Ristam Arifin as the Head of the Social Office of Konawe Kepulauan Regency is very grateful to "Minaula" Elderly Center in Kendari who has organized this event, so that public attention regarding old age will increase.

From these activities, it is hoped that families can become competent care givers in caring for the elderly at home.
